Dell G16 - Making a 16-Inch Gaming Laptop

About as much as you can fit into the palm of your hand, Dell’s new G16 (model 7620) makes one thing clear: making a 16-inch gaming laptop isn’t easy. And just to make things more complicated, Dell’s G16 is also its first crack at making such a device with a 16-inch screen of all places, rather than the traditional 15.6-inch display found on almost every gaming laptop currently out there.

Dell's G16 A Look At The Specs

The Dell G16 has some impressive specs for a gaming laptop. It has a 16-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, making it taller and wider than most 15.6-inch laptops. It also has an Intel Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card, and 8GB of RAM. Plus, it has a 1TB hard drive for storage.

It also has a fantastic battery life for a gaming laptop. Dell says it will last up to 7 hours with normal usage. The G16 is also impressive when it comes to size, with its 16:10 aspect ratio making it taller and wider than most 15.6-inch laptops. It’s 4.8 pounds and 0.94 inches thin.

It also has some impressive ports, including two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and even an Ethernet port. The Dell G16 starts at $1,399.99 and goes up from there. If you’re interested in getting your hands on one when it’s released on July 21st, head over to Dell now to order one!

This QHD Plus panel has a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution and a refresh rate of 165 Hz, just as screens we've previously seen in gaming laptops from Lenovo, Acer, and other manufacturers. Are the 160 additional vertical pixels really worth the fuss? Yes.

It is a pretty little modification, but I don't think anyone would object to having more screen space. That can mean viewing more tweets quickly during your free time or viewing more of a crucial spreadsheet without scrolling while at work, depending on your use cases. Additionally, as can be seen here, the bottom bezel is considerably smaller than on the G15. Once you get used to 16:10, it becomes very difficult to go back to the 16:9 aspect ratio.

Although the Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti (140W maximum graphics power) can be added to the Dell G16 model, the base model comes with an RTX 3050 Ti and a smaller 56Whr battery. Each variant has a 16-inch non-touchscreen display with an Intel Core i7-12700H processor. Although there are options, models starting at 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage are available (it supports up to 32GB and 2TB, respectively). Another thing to keep in mind is that the higher-end options feature Thunderbolt 4, whereas the base model with the RTX 3050 Ti does not. Dell hasn't disclosed the prices for the various combinations.

Dell's G16 A Closer Look At The Screen

When it comes to the Dell G16, the most noticeable change is the screen. The new 16-inch display has a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is taller than the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. This extra height means that there is more screen real estate for gaming and other activities. The display also has a 120Hz refresh rate, which is great for gamers who want smooth gameplay. Overall, the new Dell G16 is a great choice for gamers who want a large screen and smooth gameplay.

The vertical lengthening of its panels should pave the way for more significant changes to the Alienware lineup of gaming laptops later in 2022. Although not every game comes with support for the 16:10 aspect ratio (you'll at worst see some black bars at the top and bottom of those that don't), the support is sufficient for the majority of players to see a positive difference in their gaming experience.

A Closer Look At The Keyboard of Dell's G16

The keyboard on the Dell G16 is full-sized with a number pad, and it has per-key RGB backlighting. The keys are also well spaced out, which makes it easy to type on. There's also a fingerprint sensor on the power button, which is a nice touch. The trackpad is large and responsive, and there are two dedicated buttons for left and right clicks.

I'm surprised Dell didn't use this chance to likewise increase the trackpad's size on the G16. The trackpad appears almost absurdly little when compared to how roomy the display and keyboard are.

Dell's G16 Is A 16-Inch Gaming Laptop Right For You?

The Dell G16 is a gaming laptop with a 16-inch display. It has a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is taller than the standard 16:9 aspect ratio. The Dell G16 starts at $1,399.99 and goes up from there. So, is a 16-inch gaming laptop right for you?

Dell's G16 Is This The Right Notebook For Me?

If you're looking for a powerful gaming laptop with a large screen, the Dell G16 is a great option. It's got a 16-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, making it ideal for gaming and watching movies. Plus, it's got enough power to handle even the most demanding games. However, if you're looking for a more portable option, this laptop may not be right for you.

Dell's G16 One Final Note On Pricing

The Dell G16 will be available on July 21st, starting at $1,399.99. The display is the most notable feature on this laptop, as it is Dell's first 16-inch model with a taller 16:10 aspect ratio screen. As far as pricing goes, this laptop is on the higher end of the spectrum. However, if you're looking for a powerful gaming laptop with a large display, the Dell G16 is definitely worth considering.

Dell's G16 Summary

The G16 is equipped internally with an Intel Core i7 12700H CPU from the latest generation. The chip's maximum boost clock for its 14 cores and 20 threads is 4.70GHz. Dell will allow you to configure the G16 with up to 16GB of 4,800MHz DDR5 RAM right out of the box. The maximum amount of RAM for the laptop is 16GB, which you can increase on your own. 512GB of storage are available via a Class 35 M.2 NVMe. The G16's overall storage capacity can be configured to be up to 2TB.

You have three choices for video cards. The RTX 3050 Ti in the base model features 4GB of GDDR6 memory and can consume 90 watts of power. You can also get the G16 with an RTX 3060 or 3070 Ti. The latter is the best choice for a gaming laptop with a QHD display because it can use up to 140W of power and has 8GB of GDDR6 RAM. The G16's GPU will also determine whether it has a Thunderbolt 4 port. Only models with an RTX 3060 or 3070 Ti have the connectivity. The other features shared by both models are HDMI 2.1, three USB-A ports, a headphone jack, and an Ethernet port.

All models include WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 as standard features. Either a 56WHr or 86WHr battery powers everything.

As for the G16's typing experience, you have three choices. The laptop's standard keyboard is a one-zone RGB keyboard. You have the option to upgrade to a model with CherryMX switches and per-key lighting. On July 20, the Dell 16 will go on sale, with prices starting at $1,399.

It’s got an all-black plastic build. There’s some flex due to the plastic but build quality feels better than the cheaper Acer's  Nitro 5 I recently tested.    We are looking at under 4.8lb or 2.2kg for the laptop alone, then right on 6lb or about 2.7kg total with the 135watt power brick and cables included. The size is decent for a 15-inch gaming laptop , not super thin or anything, but not huge and still portable. This smaller footprint allows for 6mm thin screen bezels on the sides.
