Turning Your Computer On and Off: The Two Most Important Commands

When learning how to use your computer, you’ll find that there are two commands you will use the most. One of them turns your computer on, and the other one turns it off. Both of these commands are very simple, so let’s go over how to perform each one!

One of the most important command Ctrl + Alt + Delete

One of the most important commands you can learn on a computer is how to properly turn it on and off. This might seem like a no-brainer, but if you don't know how to do it correctly, you could end up damaging your computer or losing data. Here's how to properly turn your computer on and off using the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys

Another easy way to learn how to properly turn your computer on and off is through Windows' Advanced Startup menu. To access it, press then click Restart. Wait for your computer to start up, then press again to select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart. You'll be prompted with two options: Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking. If you're having trouble with an application, startup program, or driver that doesn't show up in the list of safe modes, select Safe Mode with Networking.

Once your computer restarts into Safe Mode with Networking and starts running normally again, you should be able to delete the problem software that was causing issues.

If you don't see Safe Mode with Networking or need to start your computer in different safe mode, you can access a list of additional options. Press , click Change Settings That Are Currently Unavailable, then click Restart. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart again.

When your computer restarts, you'll see a list of additional safe modes. To choose one, press . If you're still having issues with your computer, try starting it in Safe Mode with Command Prompt or System Restore.

Pause a program in Windows

If you want to stop a program from running, you can press the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys on your keyboard simultaneously. This will bring up the Windows Task Manager. From here, you can select the program you want to end and click End Task.

If you don't see the program listed in the Task Manager, it may be running in the background.  You'll need to find out which program is running by opening the Processes tab at the top of the window. In order to do this, double-click on one of the items in the list (there should only be one process). You'll then see all of that application's processes and information about them at once.

Once you've found which program is running, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete again to bring up a prompt that asks if you want to end it. Select Yes.

If you're not comfortable pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete to do it, there are other ways to shut down a program. You can also right-click on its icon in your taskbar or in your system tray (the clock in the bottom right of your screen) to get more options. From here, you can click End Task if you're using Windows 7 or later. If not, select Quit from that same menu instead.

If you're trying to quit a program that's stuck or frozen, pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete won't work. You'll need to use Task Manager instead. In Windows 7 or later, click on Start > Run and type taskmgr at the prompt. If you're using an earlier version of Windows, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete at once and click on Applications in Task Manager.

Shut Down Windows

Assuming you're using a Windows computer, there are a few different ways to shut it down. The first is to click on the Start button, then the Power button, and then select Shut Down. Another way is to press the Alt + F4 keys simultaneously. Finally, you can also use the Ctrl + Alt + Del shortcut and then select Shut Down from the menu that appears. Whichever method you choose, make sure all your programs are saved before you click OK or confirm!

If you're using a Mac, you can either shut down your computer or put it to sleep. To shut down, click on your Mac's menu bar and then select Shut Down from the drop-down menu. Another way is to press Control + Eject together. Finally, if you want to put your Mac to sleep instead of shutting it down completely, just close its display lid.

Reboot your computer

One of the most important things you can do to keep your computer running smoothly is to reboot it regularly. Rebooting clears out your computer's memory and gives it a fresh start. Plus, it can help fix any small glitches that may have developed since you last turned it on.

Turning your computer off is just as important as turning it on. Leaving your computer on all of the time will cause it to overheat, which can lead to big problems, like a total system crash. Make sure you turn your computer off when you aren't using it or after you've shut down any programs or apps that may be running in the background.
